Book Work

*** This is a list I made to help with the concepts which will become the skeleton of my INVENTED BOOK:

I feel like putting this in print will help me to organize things in my mind. Seeing something in print makes it real. This is compiled from looking back over the list that we made on the first day of school and a few things that I’ve just thought up in my own time:

What is a book? A reference to something, a process, a collection, a product of ingredients, a compilation or organization of ideas, a story, a universe, a chronology, documentation of a period, a place to hold things, a place to sort things

What is the purpose of a book? Validation, record, influence, pressing on, a database – garden of my dreams, thoughts, ideas and wonderings

What is a page? A confined space,

What is the purpose of a page? Transmission, an organizational structure, a place in time, a place to show what you harvested, to wonder why and answer it

What is a spine? Critical?, skeleton, is it defining or not?

What is the purpose of a spine? To be influential – “small towns are the backbone of American society”, vertebrae, eggs don’t have spines—proof of existence, of having been born

What is a cover? A preview, compelling, window, projection, summary, a highlight, an excerpt—made more glorious as a consciously selected point of focus

What is the purpose of a cover? To engage, to embellish, to protect?, to be protected

What is a section or signature? A pile, a bundle, an idea, a common thread, elements, ingredient, connections

*** I think that this is more analytical and directly academic-ish than anything I have done in the past 3 years.

1. Specimens of a working heart
2. Specimens of a heart working
(a heart breaking work of staggering genius by Dave Eggers)
(How could I keep from singing – traditional folk song)
(one day you’ll see her and you’ll know what I mean. Take her or leave her, will still be the same… from a NICKEL CREEK song.
*** proof of existence, of being born. Things that I collect so that when there is nothing to feel I have a back stock, a safely blanket, a buffer against feeling nothing. )

New Books

*** just look at baby Barack Obama!!

it's finally looking pretty springish around here! (A little late, but I know that I really can't complain!)
I have to make two more books for my experimental book making class.
the first is a Visually Seductive Diagramatic Novellette (what a fabulous title, right! reminds me of the Dave Eggers book that i never finished: A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius)

the second is an INVENTED book.... which may take on any form, which somehow illustrates-- ever abstractly-- properties of a book.

I've become very interested in collecting and sorting. Yesterday, my teacher Karen asked me, "so what do you collect?" I listed off a bunch of things - yarn, fabric, buttons........ but really, I just collect good things.

somehow this book will be a collection of good things. why do we collect?

a good weekend

***David Nields and Susan Daniels are starting a new theater company!!! FOX and FROG!
thats them alright! don't you think??

****a little grey today, in savannah ga. I've been working on the LOOP IT UP BLOG for a while today (worth a look!)

Kate left for her internship at the American Craft Council Show this morning, so I made this new Indian pea soup last night for sort of a farewell dinner. While making it I FINALLY got one of those new ideas that your mind just runs with (and thank god). It's for a new artist book which will be called Lovingkindness, a cookbook
in it will be food recipes, and also other sorts of instructions, ideas spelled out, things to make and do when such and such happens. I think that I will be a book artist becuase there is no end to that genre and I think that people want beautiful, useful things.

love day continued...

well, i really don't know whats wrong with this thing.
as I was saying:
it will be a button hole stitch book, with (hopefully... and if my energy holds up!) 8 signatures, each of 4 folios. this lands us with a total of 32 composed pages. I am getting close. The book will be called A YEAR IN THE GARDEN OF MY DREAMS THOUGHTS IDEAS AND WONDERINGS.... The materials that I collected were all created/found ascembled in the past year. it is important to keep records.

how will they remember us? well, by what we collect.

I've been dealing a lot with MATERIALS and COLLECTING
We've set up a Reggio style studio at the YMCA for the loop-it-up-sters. It's been amazing to see them learn + think about a studio... I've been asking them: what is a studio? what are materials? how do you use materials?

well, for more on that, you can visit the LOOP IT UP BLOG: www.loopitupsavannah.blogspot.com

much love, i must press on with the book!

love day

well, I'm very frusturated because I have all sorts of pictures on my camera to show you, but blogger won't upload them. WIERD. anyway, all is well here on love day. I've been busily working on a NEW ARTIST BOOK!! here are some pages:

An Incredible Project

*** My good friend Cayewah just sent me a link for a very cool project. The Holocaust Museum of Huston Texas is doing an exhibit to remember the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust. The I Never saw Another Butterfly project invites artists of all ages to create a hand made butterfly in any medium and send it in to the museum by June 30th.

Way more info at this site:

We're planning to do this project with the LOOP IT UP kids.

today is a sunny sunny day in Savannah GA.
